Slate Alternative - Glasgow

An interlocking clay tile with an authentic slate appearance has been selected for a £1.2 million home located in the exclusive area of Higher Whitecraigs in Glasgow.

Split over three levels, the 5,200 sq ft property has a striking external design, featuring both traditional and contemporary influences, including stone and render finishes and stepout and Juliet style balconies.

John Simpson, Surveyor said: “This unique house is in a conservation area made up of many high-value period properties. When it came to selecting the roof tiles, the local planners had a number of requirements to ensure the character of the area was maintained.

“Concrete tiles were out of the question and large format products were deemed not suitable for the local area. Planning officers approved the small format, interlocking clay slate with a riven surface and dressed edges because it is made of natural clay, has a slate appearance and met their strict criteria in terms of size.

“For a property of this size and style, the roof plays an important role in the overall appearance of the house. The chosen 'slate' looks stunning, resulting in a luxury home that exudes quality.

Compared to natural slate, using an interlocking clay slate means there is no need for double lapping in order to produce a weathertight roof. It also reduces the amount of material laid on the roof which speeds up completion times and cuts labour and scaffolding costs.”
