I was able to recycle most of the old materials from my roof – it’s surprisingly easy, not to mention rewarding.
All the old timber battens, together with off cuts from the new battens and any other pieces of waste wood were collected and stored to be used as heating fuel in a solid wood burner. There’s always a use for wood, so make sure you think carefully before you throw anything into the skip.
Non-reusable waste such as the plastic packaging and off cuts from the plastic fascias meant I did need a mini skip. These can be recycled, so make sure you dispose of the waste in the right places or they’ll end up in landfill.
Not a rubbish tip…
Old roof tiles can be sold on, and broken roof tiles (particularly clay ones) can be used in gardening to help drainage, or even underneath driveway and patio constructions as hardcore. If you can’t use them, someone else will be able to, so ask around and even advertise your tiles online – you’ll be surprised who is willing to collect them direct from your door, which is much easier that taking them to the rubbish tip.
