Clay Tiles Help in 21st Century Transformation

The Challenge

caseStudy5-1.jpg

Frank and Jackie Cordingley purchased a unique detached 1950's house designed and built by the original owner. The house was of Scandinavian style flat roof design and had not been altered or refurbished in over 50 years.

It was in a dilapidated condition and there were limitations as the house was of a long narrow design, rear facing and the interior layout was restrictive.

The Solution
Frank put his architectural skills to work and redesigned the layout adding an extra floor in the roof space, putting emphasis on the roof area which was to be over one third of the external house area. Modern techniques were to be used to create a stunning eco-friendly home while keeping the original principals of the design intact.

Henshaws were approached by the main contractor to come up with a roof covering that offered a quality and appearance to suit this individual property.

By the time the roof trusses were in place, fully insulated with solar panels installed, cost had become an issue.

The local area is a mix of natural slate and clay plain tiles. A slate appearance clay tile was put forward as the ideal option given the locality and budget restraints.

This tile can be laid just like a large format concrete tile and major labour savings can be made over traditional products.

A slate appearance was important to Frank and the Clay Slate would offer the clean lines and striking appearance that he required.

This tile has a high quality finish is long lasting and fitted in with the 'eco-friendly' conception of the whole project. The chosen tiles are manufactured by 100% green electricity.

A dry ridge system was also chosen to reduce future maintenance and add to the clean appearance of the tiles.

The Outcome

The house has been transformed mixing old with new and bringing the 1950's into the twenty- first century.

Henshaws were able to offer a new clay tile of which Frank and Jackie had no previous knowledge. Viewing the samples left them in no doubt here was a superior quality roof tile ideal for their home.

Frank said 'I made the right choice of roof tile it has added value to my home and being eco-friendly was a nice surprise'.
